The difference between a patio that looks good for twenty years and one that looks tired in two is almost entirely in what happens before the stone goes down: a proper sub-base, the right bedding mix, and falls worked out before the first flag is cut. After that it's the detail — joints kept consistent, cuts kept off the eyeline where possible, a defined edge against lawn or gravel, and the whole surface washed off so the colour comes up.
